Wines of Italy

The wines of Italy are present in all regions allowing the vineyard to enjoy a variety of climates, a variety of land and a multitude of varieties. This makes the richness of Italian wine production and allows it to export worldwide. The designations are referred to as DOCG (denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin: the best), DOC (denomination of origin: our AOC) and PGI (Typical Geographic Indication: our wine country).

There are 4 major wine regions in Italy

Overall Italy is divided into 4 major wine regions, subdivided into a multitude of names, the Italian administrative regions representing only imperfectly this diversity:

  • The north-west of the country mainly with the wines of Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy and part of Emilia-Romagna (the southern part of this region is closer to regional wines Center)
  • The North-East with the Valpolicella in Veneto, the wines of Grave and Friuli and the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige
  • The Center with the wines of Tuscany, Lazio and his famous Frascati, Umbria, Abruzzo and Marche Region
  • The South with Campania, Basilicata and Puglia, Calabria after the boot, Sicily, Sardinia and finally (albeit a bit part in wine)

The most famous Italian wines are light red as the Chianti Classico, the Valpolicella and Montepulciano, found at affordable prices anywhere in the world. But Italy also produces wines more complex and robust, as the reds tannin derivatives of Barolo and Barbaresco in the region of Piedmont, or the "Super-Toscans" produced around of areas D.O.C.G. naming. The most famous Italian white wine Soave, a wine is very sex and light without excess of character. The Asti spumante is also renowned as one of the best affordable alternatives to the champagne. But the multi-millénaire tradition of Italian wine and its hundreds of indigenous grape varieties found nowhere elsewhere, Italy is a vast territory to discover for wine lovers.
